In 1980, Mount Saint Helen's erupted and nearly destroyed Dwain and Marilyn Foresters farm where they made their living harvesting hay. In 1987, the Foresters left hay farming behind and founded S Diamond Bar Dairy in Royal City, WA. Twenty-two years later, they now milk 500 Holsteins and belong to the DFA Co-op.
To feed their herd, Dwain and Marilyn recently purchased a 950 cu. ft. Patz Model 2400 Twin Screw Vertical Mixer from their local Patz Dealer, Excel Dairy Service, Inc. of Mount Vernon, WA. They also added rubber side extensions to increase their mixing capacity to 1,100 cu. ft.
As efficiency is key to the success of any operation, the Foresters are pleased that they can feed fewer, larger loads with their Patz mixer. "We mix 20,000-24,000 lb. loads now. We cut out 3-4 loads per day which saves us on time, labor and fuel costs," said Dwain.
The Foresters are impressed by the quality of the palatable, total mixed ration their Patz produces as well as the wide variety of feedstuffs it can handle. Dwain stated, "Since we use 90 lbs. of corn silage in our loads, it is very important that we don't over-mix. Now we have more control of the fiber length."
Part of what attracted Dwain and Marilyn to a Patz mixer is its superior design. Even with its large mixing capacity, the 950 cu. ft. Patz Model 2400 has a low profile at a height of only 106-3/4", making for easy loading. Dwain also mentioned that he appreciates the walking tandem with eight wheels for smooth transport in rough terrain.
After experiencing the benefits of feeding with a Patz mixer, the Foresters have not hesitated to spread the good word to other farmers. According to Dwain, "Because of its overall performance, Id recommend this product to anyone that is looking for a mixer."
