In Mount Vernon, WA, brothers Steve and Jeff Boon are the second generation to operate Western Valley Farm. Their parents established the dairy 25 years ago and now, together with their sons, own another farm in the area as well as a heifer raising facility in eastern Washington. They currently have a combined herd size of 1,200 head.
The Boons had been feeding the herd with an auger mixer but had difficulty processing their own hay due to its dry, stringy texture. As purchasing hay is costly, they decided to contact their local Patz Dealer, Excel Dairy Service, Inc., to find a more efficient feeding method.
With their Patz Dealers guidance, the Boons invested in a 950 cu. ft. Patz Model 2400 Twin Screw Vertical Mixer to better meet their needs. To feed their large herd, they opted to add rubber side extensions, increasing their mixing capacity to 1,100 cu. ft.
Today, they are pleased to report that they have been able to cut costs, adding to their bottom line. "Our old auger mixer couldn't process our hay, and the augers would break. Now we can use our own grown feed and in doing so are saving money", said Steve.
In fact, the Boons are so pleased with their mixers performance that they would like to purchase an additional Patz Model 2400 Vertical Mixer. Steve stated, "Most products are good when they are new, but to me the biggest test of a products value is time. We have been feeding with our Patz for about a year now and haven't had any major problems with it."
